Phonics: Read, Write, Inc Scheme

At Badgerbrook Primary School, we use the Read, Write, Inc (RWI) phonics scheme to teach reading and writing from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Autumn Term in Year 2. We combine this with other reading and writing opportunities to suit all pupils. Following this approach, pupils are taught in ability groups, thus enabling them to be taught according to their reading level, not their age. This systematic and structured program, is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers, and willing writers.

Key Features:

  • Structured Learning: The RWI program is meticulously organised into progressive stages that align with pupils’ developmental milestones. Starting from simple sounds in EYFS, the scheme gradually introduces more complex phonics as pupils move into Year 1 and Year 2.
  • Synthetic Phonics Approach: RWI employs a synthetic phonics approach, where pupils learn to read and write by blending sounds to form words. This method is proven to be highly effective in developing reading skills quickly and efficiently.
  • Daily Lessons: Phonics lessons are conducted daily to ensure consistent practice and reinforcement of skills. Each session includes reading, writing, and speaking activities to engage pupils and cater to different learning styles.
  • Phonemic Awareness: The program emphasizes the development of phonemic awareness, teaching pupils to identify, segment, and manipulate sounds in words. This foundational skill is critical for successful reading and spelling.
  • Assessment and Differentiation: Regular assessments help teachers track progress and identify areas needing additional support. The program allows for differentiation, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of ability, can achieve their full potential.

Benefits:

  • Early Reading Success: By the end of Year 2, pupils typically achieve significant reading fluency, setting a strong foundation for future learning.
  • Improved Writing Skills: Alongside reading, pupils develop their writing abilities, learning to spell and construct sentences with confidence.
  • Enhanced Speaking and Listening: The program promotes clear articulation and active listening, improving overall communication skills.
