Maths

True learning and excellence in mathematics come from perseverance and a love of the challenge, not from a fear of failure.” – Ron Berger

At Badgerbrook Primary School, our maths policy is designed to create a positive and engaging learning environment where every pupil builds a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and skills. Our balanced approach includes hands-on activities, problem-solving and the use of technology to enhance learning. We are dedicated to high-quality instruction that caters to the diverse needs of our pupils, promoting a growth mind-set and a lifelong appreciation for mathematics. We aim to instil a love of mathematics in our pupils, fostering curiosity and an appreciation for the subject’s beauty and power. Our goal is for all pupils to enjoy maths, experience success, and become confident, lifelong mathematicians.

Teaching and Learning

We use the ‘I do, we do, you do’ model to gradually release responsibility, ensuring pupils understand concepts through demonstration, collaboration, and independent practice. Our curriculum, supported by the East Midlands South Maths Hub and White Rose, emphasises coherence, representation, mathematical thinking, fluency, and variation. We prioritise the three aims of the National Curriculum to develop well-rounded mathematicians; fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Pupils regularly link mathematical concepts to the real-world, understanding maths’ fundamental role in various aspects of life and careers. In EYFS and KS1, we follow the Mastering Number program which ensures strong foundational skills in number sense.

Assessment and Feedback

Regular assessment and feedback ensure pupils’ progress is closely monitored and supported. We use a combination of formative and summative assessments and parents receive updates on their child’s progress three times a year.
